I've been back to work for a few weeks now. There have been a couple actual in-person live shows, but the rest has been virtual. I'm happy to be doing either, but I really like working virtually. It was nice to see my co-workers in person for a few days, but commuting got old fast. I'm not even complaining about all my virtual events being on the opposite coast. Waking up at 3am to login to my systems and start doing checks is better than fighting through traffic any-day. If this type of job ends up being permanent I'll leave LA.
A couple days ago work sent out a survey asking who would be interested in becoming a virtual events project manager and I responded. I could have done a better job answering the questions, but I hope I did well enough to at least be granted a proper interview. If they call I can fill in the blanks a bit more. I was worried about sending them a novel, and I fear I didn't even cover half of what they were asking me about.
My technical setup keeps evolving, but it's doing pretty good right now. There are two work machines, both with external monitors, and a virtual KVM (called Input Director) to tie a single mouse and keyboard to both. There's a USB hub that I plug my Stream Deck, keyboard/mouse receiver, and headphones into. The headphones are a gaming model and have two channels with a small knob to adjust the mix. The headphones are also shared between the two computers with a program called Voicemeeter. It beams any audio I want from one computer to the other and vice versa. So wherever my zoom call is, or if there's more than one, I can hear it and respond. Same with my livestream audio. Voicemeeter allows me to route audio to either channel of my headset, the computer speakers, the tv, my wireless headphones, or wherever. It's a godsend and I've tested it out enough that I really ought to pay the donation. The Stream Deck is a handy home for all my mute buttons. Essential to making sure I'm only speaking where I intend and can kill any channels that get overwhelming.
